6 Dietary Steps to a Cleaner Digestive System

Diets play a big part in the cleanliness of our digestive systems. You have probably read dozens of articles that talk about how our digestive systems accumulate waste and toxins from the food and drinks in our diets everyday. Fortunately there are also foods that help cleanse our digestive systems. In addition to using Clearstart®, here are 6 dietary steps that you can take to cleanse and detox your digestive system:

Step 1: Drink a glass of warm water and freshly squeezed lemon juice ½ hour before breakfast. This helps to increase bile flow to help the liver break down excess fat and eliminate excess toxins.

Step 2: Add a touch of chlorophyll to your daily tea or to a glass of water in the middle of the day. Chlorophyll is a wonderful detoxifier, derived from alfalfa. It acts as an antioxidant, supporting cellular health and increasing red blood cell production; which helps to boost energy levels as well.

Step 3: Incorporate more fibre into your diet to help regulate bowel movements and eliminate excess toxins. Oat bran or ground flaxseeds on top of cereals, in applesauce or in smoothies are a great way to get more fibre!

Step 4: Start adding liver friendly foods to your diet such as beets, carrots, celery, lemons, turmeric, rosemary, cumin and curries.

Step 5: Try to eliminate or at least limit your consumption of potential allergenic foods for a period of 4-10 days. These foods include refined sugars, MSG, dairy, oranges, chocolate, soy, peanuts, yeast, caffeine, alcohol and simple starches (anything white). Wheat should also be avoided. Good alternatives include 100% rye bread, Ezekiel bread, brown rice, quinoa, barley, oats and millet.

Step 6: Finally, try to give your digestive system a break by following a 1-5 day liquid cleanse. In this time frame you can have anything you want as long as it is in liquid form, and free from simple sugars, alcohol, caffeine, and preservatives. Good suggestions include soups (pureed), smoothies, 100% fruit and vegetables juices, and organic broths. Flax, sesame or pumpkin seed oil can also be added to smoothies or soups.

Ask Our Columnist

Q: Why is it important to have protein first thing in the morning?

A: Think of your body as a computer.

At night with extended darkness in the retina of your eye, the body releases naturally occurring melatonin (a hormone). Think of this as turning off your computer.

In the morning with first extended light in the retina, your body releases naturally occurring DHEA, think of this as turning the computer back on.

Just like your computer, your body is looking for files to start properly. The first thing your body looks for is a new source of protein. If your body doesn't sense new protein within the first 30 minutes of waking (the release of DHEA), it sends a signal that the body is trying to starve itself. The first thing it does in a response is to lower the metabolism to conserve what protein it has in the body. If no new protein has been detected within 2 hours, your metabolism is basically shut off for the day until you reset the computer the next day.

One of the keys to protein in the morning is approximately a 2 to 1 ratio (eg. 14 grams  of protein to 7 grams  of carbohydrates). If the carb content is too high, the body will only read the carbs and not the protein.

We suggest the Lean Complete Meal Replacement as soon as you get up in the morning (within the first 10 minutes). Taken in water, it has 18 grams of protein and 10 grams of carbohydrates.

One thing to remember is to not add anything else to the shake -- fruit has lots of carbohydrates as does your favourite fibre product -- because it will change the ratio needed for best results. You can have some fruit or other carbohydrate items about 30 minutes after your protein.

Water or Cola

WATER

#1. 75% of North Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half the world population.)

#2. In 37% of North Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger.

#3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism by 3%.

#4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

#5. Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

#6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

#7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

#8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should drink every day?

COLA

#1. In many states the highway patrol carries two gallons of cola in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

#2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of cola and it will be gone in two days.

#3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in cola removes stains from vitreous china.

#4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in cola.

#5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

#6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

#7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the cola for a sumptuous brown gravy.

#8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of cola into the load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

#1. the active ingredient in cola is phosphoric acid. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis.

#2. To carry cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial trucks must use hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

#3. The distributors of cola have been using it to clean engines of the trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a glass of water? or cola?

Focus Food Plus™ Replaces Ginkgo Complex™

Do you find that your memory is not as sharp as it once was? Do you forget things more and more often?

If you use Ginkgo Complex to help improve your memory, learning, alertness, and cognitive functions, you'll be delighted to learn that Focus Food Plus uses the same ingredient Ginkgo biloba, but at a higher amount per capsule/serving!

Moreover, Focus Food Plus combines Bacopa monniera, AFA blue green algae, enzymes, green tea extract, and Glyceryl Phosphoryl Choline (GPC) to promote mental clarity and fight age-related cognitive decline.

Ginkgo biloba Increases blood flow to the brain and boosts oxygen levels in the brain. Benefits of enhanced circulation in the brain include improved short and long term memory, increased reaction time and improved mental clarity.
Bacopa monniera Repairs damaged synapses in the brain. Stress, age and poor diet negatively affect nerve function. Bacopa is for the young and old alike.
AFA blue green algae Improves mental clarity, alertness, concentration, memory retention and mood. Phenylethylamine (PEA), a compound found in the algae, appears to be responsible for its widely reported brain enhancing effects. It is naturally produced by the brain and is responsible for experiences associated with pleasure and mental awareness.
Green Tea Rich in protective polyphenols (antioxidants) that protect the body from free radical damage. Brain tissue, being composed mostly of fats, is particularly sensitive to oxidative and free radical damage. During intense periods of stress the excess free radical activity created can make one feel sluggish and dull.
Glyceryl Phosphoryl Choline (GPC) A unique soybean extract that significantly benefits attention, mental focus, recall and cognition, in all age groups including young and healthy subjects.
Enzymes Increase the bio-availability, assimilation and cellular delivery of the valuable nutrients and phyto chemicals.

Unicity brought the latest brain and memory research to fruition and introduced Focus Food Plus at the San Diego Convention in February. This superior and more advanced formulation replaces Ginkgo Complex, which has been discontinued.

Fruit and Vegetables Cut Heart Disease Risk, Says Study

According to a new study published in the current issue of the Journal of Nutrition (Vol. 136, pp. 2588-2593), a study found that the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) was cut by four per cent for each additional fruit and vegetable portion consumed, and by seven per cent for fruit portion intake.

"This meta-analysis of cohort studies shows that fruit and vegetable consumption is inversely associated with the risk of CHD," concluded the reviewers.

This raises the question of "how many portions of fruit and vegetables do you eat everyday?"

Recent studies have shown that the average consumption of fruit and vegetables per person in developed countries is three portions a day.

In order to bridge the gap between how much fruit and vegetables you intake and how much you should intake on a daily basis, consider adding Daily Produce 24™ into your diet.

With extracts from 24 varieties of fruits and vegetables, Daily Produce 24 provides natural nutrients missing in many people's daily diets. By supplying micronutrients and natural enzymes, this supplement protect the body against oxidative damage and help you reach your daily produce intake.

Heart Health Seminar Featuring Cardiologist Dr. Jerry Bresnahan -- Toronto, March 30

Heed your doctor. They have advice for you which can save your life.

Here's a story from one of our leaders in Germany, Dr. Sven Goebel, who only realized the power of Bios Life when a heart-felt tragedy impacted his life:

“I get it. I’ve worked with Bios Life for a couple of years, but I now get it. Several years ago my wife and I divorced. We have one son. He’s now eight years old. He’s the love of my life.
“My wife re-married. She married a man who also has a son – eight years old. Most afternoons, I go to the school and pick up these two little boys who are now good friends.
“About a year and a half ago, this man came home and he said to his wife, ‘I don’t feel so well. No big deal, but I think I’m going to go to bed.’ She said, ‘Fine’ and got the two little boys ready for bed. A couple of hours later she went to bed.
“In the morning, she woke up. She felt for her husband, and what she felt was a cold body.”

Sven didn’t understand Bios Life's power of eliminating that kind of tragedy from the lives of people – until that point in time:

“Now, I go pick up my son and this other little boy from school. And I look in the rear view mirror and see those two little faces in the back seat. My son – he has a father. He knows his father loves him, and is there for him. And I look at that other little boy, and what do I see? I see a little guy that doesn’t have a father here – with a friend sitting next to him and the friend’s father driving the car. And it tears my heart out.”

We have a duty to tell everyone about Bios Life.
